SGI CPU Specs


Because of the number of SGI systems available in the Departement of Chemistry, the following table was compiled.

Caution! The method of measuring CPU characteristics changed in ~1995. Some of the numbers presented below are NOT true specifications, but are estimates based upon the specs measured with the other method. For example, the R4600PC Spec 95 is estimated from the R4600PC Spec 92 and the R4400SC Spec 92 and Spec 95.

The purpose of this list is NOT for computer science benchmarking. Rather, this list is intended to give you an estimate and appreciation of the evolution of SGI CPU power.

Spec 92 int and Spec 95 int measure the speed of calculcations involving integers. Spec 92 int and Spec 95 fp measure the speed of calculcations involving floating points (i.e., numbers with decimals). Virtually all chemistry calculations use only floating point calculations.

The following table is certainly out of date, but might prove useful to users of older SGI systems.
